Amazing impact of tuning fork treatment: sound healing on the acupuncture Shu points
I recently saw a wonderful lady for one of my sound healing treatments on the acupuncture Shu points with tuning forks, as I steadily build my experience and practice following training between lockdowns in the period of the pandemic. A slightly unusual treatment, developed by Tama-Do founder, teacher and practitioner Fabien Maman, it uses 12 pitch-perfect tuning forks to stimulate the Shu points (or acupuncture command points) of the 12 acupuncture meridians. The theory, which has been backed up by 7 years of research by Fabien Maman, is that stimulating the Shu points with a specific sound frequency brings about harmonisation of the body's energy lines (meridians), thereby bringing the system into balance. The Shu points are notably said to bring uplifting balance. So, with this background in mind, I wanted to share with you an interesting case study which showed how the lady receiving a treatment was able to physically sense aspects of the energy flowing through the meridians and affecting her being within her body as they were stimulated by the tuning forks, sometimes with considerable insight.
During the treatment, I only shared which meridian (each of which is linked to a bodily organ) I was working on after stimulating the Shu points with the receiver. However, she was very mindful during the treatment and often sensed which area of the body the Shu point was linked to, and sometimes sensed where the energy lines run through her body via these sensations.
Throughout the treatment, we both noticed a difference in the feel of the vibration and the duration of the vibration between the left and right sides of the body. More often than not, although not exclusively, we noticed that the right side of the body did not "absorb" the energy, or vibration, of the sound as much as the left side. This meant the sound disappeared more quickly from the tuning fork on the Shu points on the left side as the body drew in the energy of the vibration. This being the case, the tuning fork was used repetitively on the Shu point until such time as the body stopped 'taking it in'. Now there are various possible explanations for this, but one may be that the right side, which is more responsible for the 'letting go' and the 'giving out' of energies, is less flowing and therefore reflecting the sound back. Alternatively, perhaps the right side (the masculine or yang side) of the lady's being is more buoyant and strong. Perhaps she is very good at giving to others and taking charge of things in her life. Whatever the explanation, the body will let us know what it needs and, so long as we respond to its messages during the treatment, we can help create the sense of balance, flow and harmony.
The left side of the body is our 'yin', or feminine, aspect. This is the receptive side that is willing to receive and nurture. The receiver's willingness to receive was certainly evident within the body, but perhaps it needs to be in balance with lots of 'giving'. Again, we don't need to interpret the why, but this is one possible explanation. The body will continue to take what it needs all the same.
What was still more interesting was that the receiver felt specific physical sensations and some more subtle feelings in and around the body for the specific Shu points in the treatment. For example, when I stimulated the lung meridian (the detail of which the receiver was not aware of), she told me that she felt she needed to take some deep breaths. When I stimulated the large intestine meridian, she felt a heaviness in her abdomen which released with further stimulation of the Shu points. She also experienced a sense of a blocked nose at the first stimulation, followed by the nose appearing to release the blockage. What is especially interesting about this is that the large intestine meridian terminates at the base of the nose!
When her bladder and kidney meridians were stimulated (again, she was not told which meridian was being stimulated, and most of the Shu points are located on the hands and feet), she felt a fullness in her bladder, as if she could go to the toilet, despite knowing that she didn't need to go. There were more sensitivities in the backs of the legs and lower back when the liver meridian was stimulated, and a general sense of wellbeing as the spleen meridian was stimulated, the spleen being strongly linked to our immune responses. I find this untrained awareness and sensitivity truly fascinating and amazing. It has really reinforced to me how these ancient systems of energy medicine are truly well informed and as real as real can be.
I'm aware that not everyone is so finely tuned in to their body and their energies as this particular receiver. However, for both of us, it was a real confirmation that the meridians, or energy lines, in the body exist and they respond to specific sound vibration in a very unique way.
